*We will introduce you to a class that fits your child, considering both their age and current English level.

*Each “magazine” is designed to be completed over five weeks. Here is an example of the content. The content is updated as needed.

●Course Features
A major strength of the British Council, one of the leading organizations in English education worldwide, is its learning approach based on communicative teaching methodologies.

CLIL Content and Language Integrated Learning
CLIL is a learning method that not only teaches English itself, but also allows learners to study other subjects such as history, science, and geography in English.
TBL Task-Based Learning
TBL is a learning method that enables students to acquire natural English expressions while working on practical tasks relevant to the real world.
CLT Communicative Language Teaching
CLT is a learning method that focuses on expressing thoughts and opinions in their own words, rather than repeating set phrases.

This course develops learners’ ability to express their thoughts and feelings while learning familiar topics in English and working on purposeful tasks. English is not just a “subject of study.” Learners naturally acquire it as a “tool” by learning through themes that stimulate intellectual curiosity.

In our classes, learners study one magazine, for five weeks, covering topics related to contemporary society and global issues such as AI, ethical food, and climate change. At the end of each magazine, as a culmination of their learning, they create presentations, posters, and other projects. Through these activities, learners develop their confidence and ability to express themselves while using English in real-life communication.

Learners also develop their critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and independent learning skills through continuous feedback and reflection.

Learners steadily develop the foundation of the English language skills and real-life competencies, while gaining the ability to understand, organize, and express their ideas in English confidently. Through dialogue, discussion, presentation, and writing, they will gradually strengthen their ability to think and communicate in English.

For example,
They acquire the ability to:

  • organize and express their ideas in English
  • deepen discussion while listening to others’ opinions
  • express themselves through presentations and writing
  • learn and work on tasks collaboratively
  • find their own learning methods through reflection

*Please note that the above are examples; actual outcomes may vary depending on your child’s English level and learning experience.

Learners will develop the ability to think in English about more complex and abstract topics, and to logically construct and express their ideas. Through discussion, presentation, writing, and research, they will also develop the ability to read and analyze information, consider evidence, and communicate their opinions persuasively in English.

For example,
They acquire the ability to:

  • analyze multiple sources of information and organize their ideas
  • express and present ideas logically with supporting evidence
  • think critically while considering diverse perspectives
  • demonstrate initiative and leadership through collaboration
  • use English skills that can leads to study abroad and international career paths

*Please note that the above are examples; actual outcomes may vary depending on your child’s English level and learning experience.

●What is the Learning Hub?
British Council’s original online learning platform, “Learning Hub”, enables learners to study at their own pace while engaging in preparation and review for lessons. In the Secondary Plus Learning Hub, which focuses on listening, writing, and reading, learners deepen their understanding of lesson content and develop the ability to learn independently.

We also use authentic materials such as magazine articles, job advertisements, film reviews, music podcasts, and sports blogs to motivate and help learners improve their grammar and vocabulary.

They can work on projects and check their learning progress anytime using a personal dashboard.

 Students’ Voices (Excerpt)

The British Council’s course provides many opportunities for speaking and writing, so I felt I needed to participate more actively in lessons. Also, by considering issues such as food and marketing from a global perspective rather than only from a Japanese perspective, I have come to think more about balance and equality in the world.
Secondary Plus, M.K.

I was very happy that the teacher was cheerful and encouraged me to speak more. Even when I made mistakes, the teacher kindly taught me, which made me feel more willing to try speaking. I also enjoyed the time spent coming up with ideas and discussing with other students which one was better. The teacher used many words that I did not know and wrote them on the whiteboard to explain them one by one, so I was able to learn many new words in each lesson, which I found very valuable.

FAQ

Q. Is this course suitable for beginners with no experience in English? What kind of students usually take this course?

A. If you have no experience in learning English or taking other lessons, you can feel free to join this course. If your child can write the alphabet to some extent, they can begin learning more smoothly. Students’ personalities and approaches vary. There are many types of students —some are energetic and outgoing, while others prefer to learn at their own pace. Teachers will carefully support each child, respecting their personality and learning pace. Children from Japanese families, as well as those from families with roots in various countries and regions, join this course. They can experience English in a diverse environment.

Q. Can we have a trial lesson?

A.We want you to book a consultation so that your child can start learning at a suitable level with confidence. We will introduce an optimal course plan for your child, asking about their current English experience and preferences.

Q. Do children in this class speak Japanese? Is Japanese allowed?

A. Lessons are conducted entirely in English, providing an environment where children can fully immerse themselves in English. While we do not actively encourage the use of Japanese, it is not strictly prohibited. Especially for beginners and younger children, it is a natural developmental process to express themselves in their native language before organizing their thoughts. Our teachers carefully support each child so they can express what they want to say in English. They gradually develop the ability to think and express themselves in English as they continue learning.

Q. Are all the teachers from the UK?

A. No, not all of them are. Their nationalities vary, and teachers with diverse backgrounds instruct our classes. Also, the course material published by the British Council, “Magazine,” is developed in the UK, and the listening materials primarily feature British English.  All teachers are native English speakers or have English proficiency equivalent to CEFR C2, the highest level. They are also professionally trained to teach non-native learners and hold internationally recognized teaching qualifications such as CELTA and DELTA.

Q. Do only outgoing children speak during the group work?

A. It is important for English learners not only to speak, but also to listen to others and understand the flow of interaction. Learning alongside more outgoing children also provides opportunities to learn how to express themselves and how to participate in conversations. While observing the class as a whole, teachers ensure that each child has opportunities to speak and participate as evenly as possible. They also take care to create an environment where every child can learn with confidence.

Q. I have learned that spending a lot of time exposed to English is important. How can we support our child at home?

A. We recommend using our online learning platform, “Learning Hub,” for learning support at home. We also offer a free library corner in our lobbies, where learners can access picture books, novels, and magazines suited to their age and English level. The collection is selected by experts in English education and includes a wide range of books, from long-loved classics to the latest titles. Learners can borrow one book at a time for up to one week. Increasing opportunities to engage with English naturally in everyday life lead learners to continuous learning.

Q. How can we check progress in English skills?

A. On the last lesson of each term, we hold a presentation for parents. Term 1 will be in July, Term 2 in December, and Term 3 in March. You will have the opportunity to see your child’s progress.

Q. If my child is absent, can we transfer to another day or join a make-up class?

A. We do not offer transfers or make-up classes for absences. Instead, we support learners so that they can easily review the material at home and catch up with the class through our online learning platform, “Learning Hub.” Please feel free to ask the teacher during or before/after the lesson, if you have any questions about the lesson content or learning methods.

Q. What does “term” mean?

A. British Council English courses for children and teenagers are divided into three terms per year, using a term-based system. It consists of Term 1 (April to July), Term 2 (September to December), and Term 3 (January to March), and the curriculum leads learners to progress gradually and effectively through each term.

Q. Can we join in the middle of the term?

A.Yes, you can. The tuition will be adjusted based on the start date. Detailed information will be provided during the consultation.

Q.If we cancel before the start of the term, what happens?

A. Cancellation is available up to the day before the course starts. The refund amount will be the total payment minus administrative fees. Please feel free to contact us for further details.
