The British Council approach to learning

As one of the world’s leading organisations in English language teaching, the British Council draws on CLIL, TBL and CLT as part of its approach to learning.

CLIL Content and Language Integrated Learning
Students learn through English, using themes and content such as history, science and geography, rather than learning English only as a subject.
TBL Task-Based Learning
Students develop natural English by working on meaningful tasks based on real-life situations.
CLT Communicative Language Teaching
Students focus on communicating their own ideas and opinions, rather than only repeating fixed phrases.

Through familiar and intellectually engaging themes, students learn through English and work on purposeful tasks. They build the ability to express their ideas and feelings in English, and begin to use English not only as something to study, but as a tool for learning, thinking and communicating.

In this Summer Intensive English Programme, students develop listening skills through video and audio materials, speaking skills through interaction with classmates and teachers, reading and writing skills through topic-based texts and written responses, and grammar in context.

Students also build the ability to work together, reflect on their own and their classmates’ learning, and understand different cultures as they use English to learn, think and express themselves.

Course content for primary school students

Primary school classes include different learning activities in the morning and afternoon.

In the morning, students explore familiar themes suited to their age and English level, using engaging magazine-style materials brought to life through games and classroom activities.

In the afternoon, students take part in British Council Clubs. These are club-style learning activities based on CLIL, where children use English to think, create, collaborate and present. Rather than learning English only as a subject, students explore themes such as board games, travel, space, detectives, art, animals, survival and magic, and use English to learn and express themselves.

The classes develop listening, speaking, vocabulary, reading and writing in a balanced way, while also building critical thinking, collaboration and presentation skills.

Week 2 Travel Around the World Students explore countries, regions and travel, developing intercultural understanding and the ability to exchange information in English.

Course content for senior high school students

Upper Secondary Plus IELTS is recommended not only for senior high school students preparing for IELTS, but also for students who want to develop academic English for future study abroad, overseas university pathways or more advanced English learning.

At the British Council, one of the co-owners of IELTS, students develop their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills in a balanced way, while building familiarity with the test format and the practical skills needed to respond effectively.

Students build the ability to understand what questions require, organise information within a limited time, think logically in English and communicate their opinions clearly.

*Unlike the other classes, the IELTS class is not project- or theme-based. It focuses on IELTS preparation and four-skills development through IELTS-style tasks.
