In February 2014, the British Council organised a series of public forums and a workshop to share the United Kingdom's experience from the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.
Ms Ruth Mackenzie (Director, London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and Curator, London 2012 Festival), Ms Moira Sinclair (Executive Director, London and South East, Arts Council England) and Ms Justine Simons (Head of Culture, Mayor of London), were invited to share their experience and insight from delivering the highly acclaimed cultural programme for London 2012 with Japanese stakeholders. They spoke about the various cultural activities that took place not only in London, but across the whole of the UK, about the importance of creating a shared vision and the opportunities from new partnerships. They also spoke about the legacy from the cultural programme, impact to the tourism sector and positive outcomes for wider society. The presentations were followed by lively Q&A sessions, where the audience actively engaged with the speakers, reflecting the growing enthusiasm towards 2020.
Over 500 people from across a diverse range of sectors e.g., policy makers from national government, local authorities, cultural organisations and the tourism industry, attended the two forums held on February 13 and 15, 2014.
The workshop held on February 14, was an opportunity to start exploring the opportunities for wider public engagement in the arts and culture, and the creation of new creative partnerships and collaborations. It brought together over forty practitioners from the arts and cultural sector, businesses, government ministries, the private sector and the third sector, starting a lively discussion towards creating a shared vision for the future of the cultural sector in Japan.
