●Guide to English levels
As one of the world’s leading organisations in English language teaching, the British Council uses the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), an international standard for describing language ability, to assess English proficiency and place learners at an appropriate level.
As a general guide, the CEFR levels correspond to the following:
A1 = Beginner
A2 = Elementary
B1 = Intermediate
B2 = Upper-intermediate
C1 = Advanced
C2 = Proficiency
