Welsh artist Freya Dooley will be invited for the Kashima 2019 Beppu Artist in Residence programme, which has been running in Beppu City since 2008. In this programme, named after the “Kashima” format of staying at a hot spring for therapeutic purposes which is still alive and well in Beppu’s hot spring culture, the artist spends a set period of time in Beppu and gains inspiration from exchanges with residents of the town and surrounding area, creating and displaying works and giving artist talks. In addition to Dooley, who creates works which fuse language, sound, and moving images, this year’s programme will invite an artist resident in Japan and a Malaysian curator.
