UK in JAPAN 2019-20 is an ambitious joint initiative by the British Council and the British Embassy Tokyo highlighting the breadth of the UK relationship with Japan, from culture to business. Starting from the Rugby World Cup in September 2019 and running through to the end of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games in September 2020, UK in JAPAN 2019-20 presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to deepen the close bonds that exist between Japan and the UK.

Through the lens of culture, sport, business and education we will create new relationships and strengthen existing ones to further joint prosperity, trust, opportunity and knowledge between our two countries.

Throughout UK in JAPAN 2019-20 the British Council will deliver a range of exciting programmes in the arts, English language and education.

Arts

Japan and the UK have built a longstanding, mutually beneficial cultural relationship. We will share our vibrant and diverse creative assets with each other and forge new partnerships focusing on the growing contribution the arts and creative industries play in driving prosperity and in enhancing well-being, diversity and inclusion.

Education

Learning a language and studying and living in other countries can change lives for the better.  Through an exciting education programme, we will create opportunities for young people to realise their potential and to make a positive contribution to the world as global citizens.

Message

Our cultural relationship provides a very strong foundation from which we can build trust, learn from each other and enable links to flourish. There is no better time to celebrate our bilateral partnership through the world-class programme of cultural and education activity that will form an integral part of UK in JAPAN 2019-20.

Matt Burney, Director, British Council in Japan
