In March 2018, the British Council invited five UK arts professionals from arts institutions who have expertise in working with older people on a study tour to Japan. The week-long programme included meetings with representatives of arts, welfare, and care sectors with the aim to gain an understanding of Japan's approach to an ageing society and to discuss possibilities for future collaborations. Alongside the study tour programme, the British Council hosted two public forums, in Tokyo and Kyoto, where the UK delegates and their Japanese counterparts shared their respective practices and explored future partnership opportunities.
