Do you need to prove your English language level for a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) application?

IELTS is on the UKVI list of approved Secure English Language Tests (SELT). If you need an IELTS test result as part of your application to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), you will need to take your test at a specific test location authorised by UKVI.

Please note: if you are applying for a Tier 4 student visa for a program of study at degree level or above at a Higher Education Institution, you should check the English language requirement of your chosen institution, as most institutions do not require a SELT for this purpose.

VERY IMPORTANT: Changes on test location for the British Council paper-based IELTS for UKVI test

Having reviewed our test environment, to ensure the health and safety of our test-takers and staff,  the British Council in Japan, Tokyo has decided to change the test venue for the paper-based IELTS for UKVI test from 6th June 2020. This decision was made based on the Japanese government’s anti COVID-19 infection measure.
Test-takers will receive the test location details via a confirmation e-mail that will be sent one week before the test.
Kindly note that this change only applies to the British Council paper-based IELTS for UKVI test in Tokyo at this stage.

Please accept our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience it may cause. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
