Role overview

The British Council Tokyo Teaching Centre is looking for qualified and experienced teachers to join our large and dynamic team from April 2020. The Tokyo Teaching Centre (TC) runs a wide range of courses both on-site and off-site within the city and surrounding areas.

The contract is for 30 hours of work a week, with up to 18 hours per week of classroom contact time. Applicants must be expert speakers of English with a bachelor’s degree who hold the Cambridge CELTA or Trinity Certificate TEFL and have two years or more full-time post-qualification teaching experience. It is also desirable that you hold Cambridge DELTA or Trinity Diploma and/or the CELTA Young Learner Extension or the TYLEC.

It is essential that all teachers must also be capable and willing to teach on all types of courses and projects. This includes teaching adults on General English and Exams preparation courses, university students, elementary, junior high and senior high school students and Young Learners (YL) at kindergarten ages.

Teachers recruited may be assigned to one of a variety of roles:

  • Teaching a range of classes, including General English and English for exams preparation courses for adult students and/or General English for elementary school students, junior and senior high school students at our Iidabashi Teaching Centre. Teachers may also be assigned to teach offsite university classes at undergraduate and post-graduate level and/or YLs aged 4 and upwards on our partner YL projects. Working days will normally be on five consecutive days of a seven-day week, with working days between Tuesday and Friday likely to include evening work.
  • Teaching English for communication to school students aged 12-15 on a flagship team teaching project in Tokyo. This involves working off-site in junior high schools, teaching up to 18 contact hours per week for up to 40 weeks of the year. For the small number of weeks during the year when school classes are not running, post holders may be assigned to other types of teaching including but not limited to General English or English for exams preparation and/or General English for elementary school students, junior and senior high school students at the Iidabashi Teaching Centre, other university work or teaching YLs on our YL partner programmes.

In addition to teaching, the post holders will hold planning meetings with Japanese team-teaching partners within assigned schools. The post holders will also liaise with the other British Council teachers working on the schools projects in materials creation, curriculum planning, and the planning and delivering of teacher training programmes for Japanese teachers of English. Working patterns for the above posts are typically Tuesday to Saturday or Monday to Friday during school term times.

  • Primarily teaching Academic English to undergraduate students at a university. These posts are for a project limited in time to teaching over two semesters of each year, meaning teachers will for the rest of the year be assigned to other types of teaching, including but not limited to General English or English for exams preparation at the Iidabashi Teaching Centre and/or General English for elementary school students, junior and senior high school students, other university work or teaching YLs on our YL partner programmes.

Successful applicants will be informed of the project or type of work to which they will be initially assigned at the time when offers of employment are made.
